Be careful not to be too careful

1.      What do you most admire about the law?

Several things! But what I most admire about the law is that it serves a form of consensus ground – for the numerous views and preferences shared by individuals and groups in a particular space. When used properly, it can be an incredible tool for development and progress. But of course, can be a tool for evil and oppression as well.

2.      What motivated you to start your platform/ What issues did you look to resolve when starting it?

Authentic Ghanaian Content:

I was called to the bar in 2015 and started practicing soon afterwards. Whenever I had a research question, my first instinct was to google and find out what was out there regarding the subject of my research. And frankly, that was quite difficult. It was easy to find American, Canadian, Australian, and South African perspectives but very little in terms of Ghanaian materials. So, I realised that there was a gap which had to be filled.

Solution:

Tell our own story.  External analysis of a foreign country and its legal sector made by a foreign writer may be straightforward to the reader but will only cover the basics.

And having previously started blogs that I abandoned because of the pressures that comes with maintaining them, I decided to work on the Ghana Law Hub with a team from the very start. Shirley Somuah (who first proposed the name of the blog). Edinam Cofie. And Samuel Nartey. And it’s been an interesting ride.

How is it authentic?

Articles on the Ghana Law Hub are reviewed by practicing lawyers with a wide range of backgrounds and experience. Our work in practice reflects on our articles' quality, which can easily be followed by our readers, whether they are new to the legal sector or experienced professionals.

3.      Can you describe your platform in 3 words?

We carried out a survey on Facebook in order to get feedback on our content and platform. From the survey, the three words most of our readers used to describe our platform were:

  • Educational

  • Insightful

  • Relevant

I want to take our readers’ words for it! I believe that this stems from our streamlined and digestible content, which we feel is easy to follow and allows our readers to leave with a comprehensive understanding of what has been written.

4.      What do you aim to achieve by the end of 2020?

The main aim is to consolidate our position as Ghana’s leading online legal magazine. We have an eye on the international market as well.

5.      What are your long-term goals for this platform?

We have big plans for the coming years, and we will be announcing some of them in the near future, but there are very exciting projects we are undertaking this year. One of them is an exclusive collaboration for a series of articles!

Enter LawMiracle:

We are looking forward to collaborating with LawMiracle on an article series called the 'The Emerging Markets of Africa.' As the name suggests, the series will focus on the emerging markets within Africa and aim to provide our readers with insights into investment hot spots in the region. We have seen a growing presence of international commercial law firms advising multinational companies in Africa, and we aim to write articles on the latest commercial and legal trends taking place in these regions.

6.      Where can I find out more about your platform?

Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are the best ways to find out more about us. Our Instagram is launching soon. (Keep an eye on that!)

7.      What is the best law-related show/movie that you have watched?

I enjoyed watching “Anne with an E”. The story revolves around a young orphaned girl who is mistakenly sent to live in a home of strangers and her struggles integrating into the wider community. Although it is not directly related to law, it is set in an era where the norms and the social structure had their own limiting impacts.

8.      What is your guiding philosophy in life?

Tough one. I would say – embracing ambiguity – keeping cool – and making allowance for regret in life. No one really knows what they are doing. That is why embracing ambiguity matters. Things won’t always go your way. So, you maintain a cool head. And you would certainly make a bad decision or two. But give yourself room and space to make those mistakes and recover from them. Like they say, “be careful not to be too careful”. Lol

9.      What is the best thing that has happened in your journey so far?

Integrating Ghanaian culture within our writing:

The best things that have happened are the things I never thought will happen. I work with an incredible team, and for which I am exceedingly grateful.

I also am proud of the renaissance in legal writing in the Ghanaian space and the contribution of the Ghana Law Hub to this. Our platform has helped lawyers and aspiring lawyers to stay up to date with the legal news and development in the legal space.

Results:

The Ghana Law Hub is ranked by Feedspot in its top 100 legal blogs every lawyer and law student should follow in 2020. It can only get better. The Ghana Law Hub of 2020 will definitely not recognise the Ghana Law Hub of 2025. And that is a promise!
